Refined, pale-colored natural resin used for clear finishes in woodworking, food coatings, and pharmaceuticals.
At Shellac Exports, we export premium Shellac and its derivative products from India in accordance with international quality standards. Our Bleached Shellac is produced using a specialized chemical treatment process that removes natural pigments and impurities to yield a pale, refined product. This product is ideal for applications where a light, neutral finish and enhanced clarity are required.
Manufacturing Process
- Seedlac is dissolved in an aqueous sodium carbonate solution maintained at 90–100°C.
- The solution is then treated with sodium hydrochloride, cooled, and filtered.
- Bleached shellac is reclaimed from the filtered solution by precipitating it with sulphuric acid.
- The resulting precipitate is filtered, thoroughly washed with water (to remove residual acid), and dried.
This process produces a superior quality bleached shellac that can be further modified to achieve varying levels of wax content as required by specific applications.
Grades of Bleached Shellac
We manufacture and export Bleached Shellac in two primary grades to suit diverse industrial needs.
Waxy Bleached Shellac
This grade retains a controlled level of natural wax, providing a characteristic balance of film-forming strength and flexibility.
Specifications for Waxy Bleached Shellac:

- Acid Value: 65–90
- Ester Value: 135–195
- Saponification Value: 200–260
- Melting Point (Capillary Method): 75°C–91°C
- Wax Content: Maximum 5.50%
- Moisture: Maximum 6%
- Insolubility in Hot Alcohol: Maximum 1%
- Rosin Content: Nil
- Ash Content: Maximum 0.50%
- Heavy Metals: Maximum 10 PPM
- Colour: Pale Yellow
- Arsenic: Nil
- Iron: Nil
Dewaxed Bleached Shellac
For applications requiring a very low wax content, our Dewaxed Bleached Shellac is the ideal choice. In this process, seedlac is dissolved in an aqueous-alkali solution, filtered, dewaxed, and then bleached with sodium hypochlorite to achieve the desired light color. The shellac is precipitated with sulphuric acid and dried to produce a highly refined product.
Specifications for Dewaxed Bleached Shellac:

- Color: Maximum 1.5 (determined by appropriate colorimetric method)
- Acid Number: 75–90
- Ash Content: Maximum 0.50%
- Insolubility in Hot Alcohol: Maximum 0.2%
- Moisture: Maximum 5.0%
- Saponification Number: 210–250
- Wax Content: Maximum 0.2%
